At this early stage, the child's sense of wonder and freedom of expression must be nurtured. It is especially important at this level for the student to feel comfortable with the teacher, and be able to express himself/herself musically. The emphasis is on discovery, and right away establishing correct and effective practice habits. Singing (if the student is agreeable), and rhythm exercises (such as clapping and counting) are employed so the student may feel the music internally. Serious theory study comes at a later stage.
